Support for Government Plans for the Future
01st Jul 2015The golden days of the Public Information Film may well have disappeared , but even in the modern world occasionally the government still manages to hit the right note of advice, even if that advice is on the web rather than in the cinema or on a black and white television set.
The Ministry of Justice has created a minor stir by publishing on its website advice on Planning for the Future. As well as where and how to make an organ donation, the government also explains how the making of a Will lets you decide what happens to your money, property and possessions after your death. The advice also goes on to state that without a Will, unmarried partners don’t automatically inherit.
Laura Ablett is a solicitor at Midsomer Norton law practice Thatcher + Hallam. She specialises in Wills, Probate and Tax planning law.
‘The advice from the Ministry may seem obvious, but it is great to see the government actually promoting the topic of what happens when we die or become ill or incapacitated,’ says Laura. ‘According to recent surveys, nearly two thirds of us put our heads in the sand and do not make a Will, with sometimes disastrous consequences which our office witnesses on a regular basis.’
Laura is also pleased to see that the Ministry is keen to support the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA).
‘Unfortunately, in today’s world, particularly with our rapidly expanding elderly population, an increasing number of us are becoming unable to properly look after our own affairs,’ adds Laura. ‘The government sensibly advises that in the event of an accident or an illness, an LPA makes it so much easier (and ultimately far cheaper!) to manage the affairs of someone else who is no longer able to do so themselves.’
Further information can be obtained at www.gov.uk/organisationsministry-of-justice or Laura would be happy to speak to anyone with a query if they call her on 01761 414646.
‘The government may not be placing their eminently sensible advice on prime time television but at least it is a start and refreshing to see leadership coming from the top,’ says Laura.
