Probate Fees U-Turn

Readers of the News section of our website will be delighted to learn that the proposed probate fee hike against which we have long campaigned has now been abandoned. The Justice Minister states that this action is being taken having ‘listened very carefully to the strong views around the proposed new probate fees.’

Laura Ablett is one of our partners and a solicitor in our Wills Probate and Tax Planning team. She is extremely pleased at the breaking news.

‘This proposal should never have been mooted in the first place,’ says Laura. ‘I agree with the President of The Law Society that the proposed probate hike fees were no more than a tax on grief and inherently unfair. Nevertheless, it is encouraging that sometimes those in authority do actually listen to campaigners.’

The proposed fee hike of up to £6000 was due to come into effect in April next year.
