Although e-scooters are relatively new to the streets of the UK, it has already been highlighted that there are a number of ways in which this environmentally friendly and convenient mode of transport may lead to serious injury. Accidents involving e-scooters are increasing as the use of this mode of transport becomes more popular.

E-scooters and the law

The current rules and laws surrounding private e-scooters and rental e-scooters are as follows (July 2021):

  1. Private e-scooters remain illegal for use anywhere other than on private land and with the permission of the private landowner.
  2. Rental e-scooters can only be rented by persons who have at least a full provisional car, motorcycle or moped license. They are not to be used or ridden by children.
  3. Rental e-scooters are to be used on roads only and are not permitted for use on pavements, as they are the same class of vehicle as a moped.

Conditions of use for e-scooters vary from area to area and further information should be available from the local Council area of the County in which you are using an E-scooter.

Types of injuries from accidents involving e-scooters

There are a number of different ways the public have been injured in relation to e-scooters during trials or due to private e-scooter users breaking the law. Examples are:-

  • Tripping on an e-scooter which has been parked dangerously and falling.
  • Pedestrian being hit by a person riding an e-scooter either on the road or on pavements.
  • Car striking an e-scooter user.
  • Faulty or poorly maintained e-scooter causing injuries to the rider.
  • Faulty or defective roadways causing injury to the e-scooter user.
