Personal Injury + Medical Negligence: Spinal Injuries
14th Aug 2025
Back and spinal injuries are unfortunately very common in personal injury and clinical negligence. According to the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA), 2024 statistics:
- Around 4,400 people in the UK sustain or are diagnosed with a spinal cord injury (SCI) each year.
- The total UK population living with a SCI is estimated to be over 105,000.
Causes of back injuries
The most common causes of back injury are:
• Road Traffic Accidents;
• Workplace Accidents;
• Slip and Trip Accidents;
• Medical Negligence
Restrictions caused by back injuries
The main issue with back injuries is that the spinal cord is interconnected and required for nearly all forms of movement. When injured the restriction caused from what can be considered a comparatively “minor” injury can be extreme, restrictions include:
- An inability to work or reduction in hours;
- Care for children or other dependants;
- Difficulty in cleaning and managing the family home;
- Difficulty driving and walking
On top of the more SCI detailed above the NHS sees hundreds of thousands these minor back injury cases every year. The standard approach from the NHS is to offer physiotherapy (if considered severe enough) then wait to see if the back issue develops into a more serious issue. If so, they will consider scanning (CT and X-Ray usually) and more invasive treatment (injections and surgery).
Given their budget and the scale of back injuries presented, the NHS cannot treat each back injury on first instance nor do they usually correctly document the impact the back injury has on a patients life.
