Emily and Lauren walk 110 kilometres to raise money for Road Traffic Accident victim and bereavement support.

22nd Nov 2024 Emily and Lauren walk 110 kilometres to raise money for Road Traffic Accident victim and bereavement support.

Every year we post about Brake Road Safety Charity awareness weeks, however this year Emily and Lauren decided to do something more to support Brake’s week of campaigning.
From 17 – 23 November, Lauren and Emily have been walking 5k every day as part of the Brake5 challenge.

Essentially, participants are challenged to walk 5km every day (55km in the week!) to raise money for Brake to continue it’s vital work supporting those who have been seriously injured in road traffic accidents (road traffic accidents), and families of those who have been bereaved due to a loved one dying due to an RTA.

About Brake the road safety charity

Supporting those who are seriously injured, and those bereaved by vehicle accidents.

In order to support a cause, it is important to know about it. Brake helps in a number of ways. Firstly, they have a National Road Victim Service, which is free to use and provides support, services and signposting from day one for victims and bereaved families.

Generally, the Police will signpost victims to Brake’s services and they in turn help those affected in navigating the post accident procedures and events from the police investigation through to legal support for injury or fatality matters.

They also provide an excellent standard of emotional support at times where victims feel as though they cannot cope or they have worries such as money or having to give evidence at court.

Raising awareness and championing communities who want to make their roads safer

Brake are also active in raising awareness and seeking to make roads and driving safer for everyone. Whether it’s a pedestrian, cyclist, horse rider, motorist or passenger.
They are involved in campaigns that educate children and they support the Police in raising awareness if the Fatal Five:

1. Careless driving
2. Drink and drug driving
3. Not wearing a seatbelt
4. Using a mobile phone
5. Speeding

Brake provides a wealth of resources to assist people within their local community in reducing the dangers of the above, and in turn, protecting their community.

Why Emily and Lauren are raising money for Brake

Emily:
I am supporting Brake as being aware of the profound impact a road traffic accident can have on an individual or family, I have become alert for the vital need for support for victims.
Working with both victims and families of victims of road traffic accidents has been completely eye-opening into the devastating impacts that an accident can have. Just one reckless or dangerous action by a road user can cause somebody to lose a loved one.

Brake’s National Road Victim Service is a key lifeline for individuals or families in what is often the worst experience of their life. I would encourage anybody who has been impacted by a road traffic accident to get in touch with Brake for support, information or guidance.

I am really hopeful that we can reach our fundraising target to support such a fundamental charity and service.

Lauren:
Brake are the most important point of contact after the Police, when an accident has happened. Often there are a lot of questions and worries and their support to victims and bereaved families is essential.

Having worked with families of road traffic accident victims who have lost their lives far too soon, their work strikes a chord with me as I am always looking for ways to support those who have lost loved ones far too soon and, often, far too young, as the result of someone else’s dangerous or misguided behaviour.

Brake are a charity that I greatly encourage anyone who has suffered serious injuries or bereavement due to a road traffic accident to use. There is no time limit as to when to get in touch with them. If you need support, their friendly case workers are very much there to help any way they can.

I just hope that we are able to reach our target of £300 for Brake. As a charity every penny counts, especially in these days where we are seeing a 4% rise on pre-pandemic levels of car accidents.

Sponsor Lauren and Emily as they walk a collective 110km for Brake.

Whether it is £1 or £100, all sponsorship donations are greatly received. You can donate by clicking this link which will take you to their JustGiving page.
