Dispelling the myths – seek peace of mind

09th May 2013

Thanks to the wonder of modern medicine and healthy living we are all living to a ripe old age, enabling us to watch our loved ones grow and flourish.

Sadly, with the increased risks of stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and other mental health problems, the diminishing ability to care for ourselves in latter years is also on the rise.  We assume that our ‘next of kin’ will have the power and resources to handle our affairs when we are unable to do so ourselves.  However, this is a common myth and too often the family are denied access to assets and investments.

Too often we think the worst will not happen to us and those who are most vulnerable, through mental and physical health problems, are often ill-prepared.  This can lead to Local Authority intervention, which can and often will, force sale of assets to satisfy care fees.  The effect of this is to remove all financial responsibility from the family.  The only option for the family is a Deputyship application to the Court, which can be a complex, costly and lengthy process.

Now is the time to act, take matters into your own hands and make sure that you have appointed your own trusted attorneys to handle your finances when you cannot.  A Lasting Power of Attorney is the only way to empower the people of your choosing.  Please call us to find out more.
